First time in Asia
I expected to visit Japan first before Indonesia, but here we are. I had no idea what to expect, does Indonesia even have cool geek spots? Together with weirdo Cindy, I visited her home town JAKARTA! After a couple of days, we would be on our way to Bali. The infamous CRAZY Indonesian TRAFFIC totally threw salt in our game. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to visit the city’s legendary escape room, maybe next time?
I have noticed that Indonesia (or maybe just Jakarta? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) doesn’t really appreciate adult geeks and gamers. Gunpla, video games, arcade halls, comics and such are considered a kid thing. Like, HOW?! How would you pay around 200 euro worth of Gundam model kits and let a child play with it? This was a bit baffling to me.
Fun fact tho, every mall had an arcade hall with the latest games. For a city that doesn’t understand geeking adults they sure do cater to them. I was happy and could care less if people stared at me and thought I was lost. The following games could be found in EVERY arcade hall: Time Crisis 4, House of The Dead, Jurassic Park.
There was one arcade game with 3D glasses with various scenarios to choose from. We chose the horror scenario, boy oh boy was that a disaster! It sort of a rollercoaster ride as well. The seat moves up and down, left to right to simulate the feeling of flying. It felt more like flying through a tornado Dorothy and Toto style. All that shaking left my wig on crooked ;-).
When in Bali, you don’t go there to hang out indoors. So naturally, I didn’t spend much time indoors either. It was too hot to stay inside and besides Bali has amazing scenery. You would be wasting that behind door. Bali isn’t a geek travel destination however, if you were looking for a bit of geek it’s there. Some places have arcade games and the island has a couple of Cat Cafes. I visited The Odd Cat.
It’s owned by a guy who has a lot of kittens. So many cute kitties who are very open to being touched, loved and hugged. Do keep in mind that on the island you will find a lot of underfed and small animals.
My overall experience in Indonesia was amazing. Jakarta and Bali aren’t destinations you go to for a full-on geek centered vacation. But if you are looking for a (gaming) geek fix there are places you can go to.
Some Indonesian Geek Spots
These are the spots I’ve visited while in Jakarta and Bali
- Amazing D’Caribbean (Arcade Hall in Jakarta)
- Timezone (Mall Bali Galeria) (Arcade Hall in Bali)
- The Odd Cat Cafe (Cat Cafe in Bali)
- Books & Beyond (Book store in Bali that sells comics, games, and toys)
The escape room I wanted to visit is called Time Machine and there are 3 different locations in Jakarta: Time Machine Indonesia (Muara Karang), Time Machine Indonesia (Pluit), Time Machine Indonesia (PIK).
Are you a Jakarta or Bali native and you know some awesome geek worthy spots in your neighborhood feel free to drop your suggestions in the comment section.
